People often ask “How good are ferrets with other pets?”
Attitude
As with anything in pet ownership, your attitude is going to determine success. Patience & supervision is essential. Ferrets are very intelligent and respond to proper training, especially that which sets boundaries on what you expect and what you allow.
Hunter Instinct
You also have to consider what other pets are in the home. Ferrets are hunters and carnivores, so they should not be brought into a home with animals like reptiles, fish, bunnies or birds. They can, however, live with dogs & cats, as long as there is proper introductory training.
Territory
Ferrets of both genders use various methods of creating scents that mark their territory, and a house with other pets could lead to this. Our Pet Counselors will happily discuss ways to reduce this behavior. You should always use an enzyme-based product to clean up any scents from accidents. We offer a number of products based on the Four Basic Needs of pets while you and your pets are learning correct behaviors.
In conclusion, if you are patient with training and are ready to train every member of the family, human and pet alike, in what behaviors are acceptable, then ferrets can co-exist very well with cats and dogs in the same household.
